One Thousand Miles, One Thousand Days

He never did stay long
Always busy, always moving on.
Marching proudly to that song
Only a minute passed, and then he was gone.

The weight of an entire nation on his shoulders
If only they knew the true cost of freedom.
Silent headstones defending those borders
Forsaken by many, guarded by some.

One thousand miles, one thousand days
No distance or time too great.
"May they always remember" he prays
Before Ignorance decides our fate.

He never smiled often
Always knowing the promise of tomorrow is dim.
His mind could never soften
Those battles never left him.

The weight of all American people
If only they saw the reality.
Honest freedom, balance so feeble
Today's triumph may be tomorrow's tragedy.

One thousand miles, one thousand days
To the warrior, it does not matter.
"May the future be brighter for them" he prays
Without him, today would be much sadder.

This one was by far the closest thing to a poem that I've written (I think, at least). It captured the regimented lifestyle I live as well as the routine and regularity that I strive to keep. As for the actual content, it stems from my role as a "protector" and as a firefighter/EMT. I see the world from a very different perspective and this brings some of that perspective to light.
