Autumn sun peeking through the treetops. From my walk in the woods just now.

If trees could speak…two pics from Antietam National Military Park in Maryland. To this day this is considered the single bloodiest day in American history. Over 21,000 killed and wounded during the Battle of Antietam in 1862 during the Civil War. The American sycamore tree here was present during the fighting for this bridge. Two pics one from just after the battle and the other from 2024 while I was hiking the battlefield. IMG_7191.jpegIMG_7197.jpeg

Ohhh I love that!!! Who built it?
From what I can gather, just locals getting together to put some.colir and imagination into the area so children would be entertained. They're quite common on woodland walks here, a fairy trail with little doors or buildings dotted along the route so kids will keep going instead of whining and wanting to turn back. My dad has even done one on the land around their home to entertain the smaller grandkids xx

That’s sooo cool!! Love it❤️❤️

Is that a fish on top of the lighthouse? What I find fascinating in your picture is how small the lighthouse looks. Is it a small lighthouse or does it look small because of the tree behind it? The composition makes me wonder about that. Was this your intention?

I read that the lighthouse never got lit. What I find fascinating in general is why so many of these institutions for the insane throughout the USA were 'built' 1850's-1900's. Why did so many people all of a sudden got mentally ill and why would they build such exquisite buildings 'just' to house the insane?
Miss, yes it is a fish on top, and the lighthouse is small. It's at the inlet to a bay off the main lake. As for the history, I really don't know too much. I think that it wasn't that many people became ill as it was the now built a place to treat them. I also think the architecture of the time dictated how nice they looked on the outside. It was a matter of image to the public. There is a prison near where I currently live that was built around the same time and looks quite nice from the outside. I have been told it is trash on the interior and is now so outdated that they will be tearing it down.
