Why is being a Slut considered bad?

It comes from old traditions about modesty perpetuated back when religious belief played a bigger role in how Western society was run. You still see those beliefs in action within many non-Western cultures (such as the Islamic world where women are expected to wear a burqa). There are also health factors to be considered: personal hygiene, let alone contraception, was basically nonexistent. Back then, both STIs and unplanned pregnancies (which were inevitably carried to term - good luck getting an abortion in medieval England, LOL) were far more common than they are today.

A woman who was chaste was seen as a paragon of virtue - loyal to her husband and armed with the self-discipline necessary to run a household while the man of the house worked. Conversely, women who had sex with many people were seen as not just disloyal to their families, but filthy as well, riddled with diseases such as syphilis. Hence the negative connotations surrounding terms like 'slut', 'whore' and 'bimbo'.

Of course, these traditions don't hold up to scrutiny nowadays: contraceptives are literally sold over-the-counter, and any pharmacy worth its salt will have personal hygiene products as well. In short, be as slutty as you want, so long as you stay healthy and safe.

Hi Shilpa, I agree all women deserve to live life happily as they wish and financially sound. It's in American mentality that men will flourish only when ladies get full liberty to enjoy sex in any form i.e lesbean, bisexual, slut or whore etc. Good luck - dinu

I think...every hobby or profession ...what ever you take it as....for some people its bad and for some its good...if you are happy with what you are doing...let no body embarrass you...just ignore and keep going with you joy....

I don't think it's bad at all...if fact I love self proclaimed whores. Love to chat about what I would love to do with you

Obviously.. During wild sex most men like calling their partner as a slut or whore and some woman like it be cause it's a turn on..but for the lesbians out there..do you sometimes call each other a slut and stuff as a turn on?

I agree with the last post. I think that most men, like myself, like to call their partner a slut or a whore during sex. I really wish that during sex, I could talk like this with my girlfreind, but she is still kind of a prude. She doesn't allow any kind of dirty talk at all, even though I have told her that it would really turn me on.

People have already commented on the social history of where the term’s connotation comes from. But I think for some women that connotation is the appeal - the idea of being “bad” and rebellious against social norms is what makes it thrilling or even liberating. Of course it depends on context, as has been pointed out.

It is such a good question Shilpa :) I think it is because people are scared to confront their own sexuality; it is easier to invalidate someone who is freed up like you rather than question your heretofore unquestioned truths. If they questioned why they thought being a slut was so bad, then they would have to confront some really painful stuff - e.g. how come they are so repressed? e.g. why they are stuck in a hopeless marriage? etc. It is much more easy and in the short term more profitable to make you wrong. I am so proud to know there are such beautiful and expressed Whore-Slut-Goddess like you.. and me :) Much Love.

Personally I find it a turn on when a woman isn't afraid to want and take sex whenever and with whomever she wants. The way I see it is - if I needed something medical handled, I'd want an experienced doctor to handle it. If I want amazing sex, I think someone who loves it and is experienced sounds perfect!

So very true. Always go for the best ;-)

I think these days behind closed doors you can be a slut. Let's face it, we all wanna be a good slut for our man. Thing is as ppl get more and more comfortable with porn and this kind of dirty sex, I think younger generations might not realise that it's a choice. It's not an entitlement to call women that name unless they are happy to be.
So it's not bad, but times are such that we gotta still be respectful.

Agreed. I think there is a distinction of being honored and respected and still being able to express and enjoy our sexuality unimpeded. We should have at 28th amendment to the constitution: The Right to Be a Slut, Enjoy & Express Sex and Be a Total Whore at ALL times.

Write to our congress person? :)

Obviously I don't mind being called a slut, bimbo, whore or something like it. Normally when a man uses one of those words while talking to me, he uses it in a sexualised way - and for me that's very enjoyable. Sure, even in these circumstances it is rather meant in a downgrading way, not an uplifting one. But I still don't mind. I love having sex, with many men, even more or less unknown ones. So to some extend I am a slut, which means calling me one isn't wrong.

Dirty talk is - when done right - a massive turn one for me. So if - for example - a stranger walks by me, looks at my body and my outfit and then responds to what he's seeing with an honest "Damn, you got a fine ass, slut" - why should I get offended by that? It is clearly meant as a compliment. It may not be an overblown one, but it is still a compliment.

To some extend I have embraced being a slut - so to me the term and the label isn't bad. It's a part of me. And I don't think it's wrong when more women embrace this identity. Maybe this way the label will lose it's rather negative connotation.

I love your last para. So well said :)
